Online Teaching and COVID-19: 

​

During the COVID-19 outbreak, Greek schools and programs are engaging in online instruction with enthusiasm. The effort has focused on transitioning in the new online format without interrupting learning activities. For many, this is a new frontier and we are asked to rise to the occasion and in the process to put students and parents at ease.  If you need help with transitioning to new teaching methods using new tools, contact AATMG or email eprionas@stanford.edu

ONLINE TEACHING PRACTICES and TIPS  for GREEK SCHOOLS

Adjust to the challenge

  • Think of essential instructional needs and what really matters  

  • Rearrange priorities  and set mini goals  

  • Adjust curriculum plans and lessons

  • Schedule and organize well

  • Make sure your students have the right equipment, know the schedule, and how to communicate with you

​

Communicate!! 

  • Communicate with your students often and clearly

  • Set expectations, create routines of when communication is expected

  • Make sure students know when material is sent

  • keep a regular pattern of communication for stability and reassurance

Synchronous and Asynchronous Instruction

  • Synchronous Instruction : Teachers meet with students at the same time “real time”.

        In a class period, about 20 min are allocated  to synchronous instruction 

  • Asynchronous: Teachers prepare class materials for students in advance of a synchronous meeting.  Students may access the course materials at a time of their choosing which allows them to work on their own schedule. Usually about 30 minutes are allocated to asynchronous instruction.

Class Assignments Activities and Tasks

  • Revisit your Can-Do statements and pick the ones that fit your class needs and circumstances

  • Create and work with less activities - Pick two activities instead of five

  • Create activities that involve the family 

  • Assign tasks with the three modes of communication in mind

    • Interpretive Mode (Comprehension) - Easy to accomplish with audiovisuals  reading text CDs that accompany a book, Youtube etc

    • Interpersonal Mode (Interactive communication - Dialogues Interviews, etc  Interactive activities one to one or within a group). Harder to accomplish – better to use video conferencing,  text messaging, etc

    • Presentational Mode  (Communication in spoken or written form). Easy to accomplish independent of low or high technology

Motivate your Students

  • Personalize work and engage siblings and family

    • Here is an example of a task for the class involving the family (asynchronous): Be a chef and create menus for the family weekly dinners. Publish and send your menus. Discuss or send reports on line- or by email and talk about decisions you had to make based on family preferences or diet restrictions, using Greek language​

Feedback  and  Grades

  • Build in simple accountability

  • No matter how you grade and what evidence you collect

    • Remember to give essential feedback on what was improved and how. Be specific with examples

    • if improvement is needed, explain how this can be accomplished with your help

​

Technology

  • Low tech - high tech : Either form of technology that works for your class will be fine 

    • Zoom, audiovisuals, google class, "audacity" for recording, texting, email, phone, paper etc.

​

Classroom Management

  • Set expectations

  • Bring humor to your classes

  • Work smarter not harder

  • Be empathetic

  • Let your students breath

Λόγω της ιδιότυπης κατάστασης που επικρατεί μετά το κλείσιμο των σχολείωνκαταννοώ πως όλοι μας βιώνουμε ιδιαίτερες και πρωτόγνωρες συνθήκες στην καθημερινή μας ζωή. Στις 13 Μαρτίουόο που διακόπηκαν τα μαθήματα, στο Ελληνικό μας Σχολείο αποφασίσαμε να θέσουμε σε λειτουργία την εξ αποστάσεως εκπαίδευση για όλα τα επίπεδα των παιδιών και των ενηλίκων. Ως διευθύντρια του Ελληνικού Σχολείου /ΤΕΓ στο Belmont–CA, χωρίς να χαθεί πολύτιμος χρόνος για τους μαθητές μας, σχεδιάσα και οργάνωσα τις διαδικτυακές τάξεις και η διδασκαλία ξεκίνησε στις 17 Μαρτίου, με την αμέριστη υποστήριξη των συνεργατών μου.

 

Η εξ αποστάσεως διδασκαλία δεν υποκαθιστά την δια ζώσης εκπαίδευση, αλλά διατηρεί στενή την επαφή των μαθητών με τους εκπαιδευτικούς και το σχολείο. Η ασύγχρονη εκπαίδευση, την οποία βιώνουμε, είναι περισσότερο ευέλικτη από τη σύγχρονη, αφού μας δίνει τη δυνατότητα τόσο να χρησιμοποιήσουμε ψηφιακά εργαλεία, ηλεκτρονικά  βιβλία και διάφορες εκπαιδευτικές πλατφόρμες, όσο και να συνεργαστούμε και με άλλους συναδέλφους μοιραζόμενοι υλικό και ιδέες.

​

Οι ψηφιακές πλατφόρμες ZOOM & Google Class είναι σε εφαρμογή σε καθημερινή βάση από του δασκάλους μας. Οι σειρές ΚΛΙΚ (Κέντρο Ελληνικής Γλώσσας, ΑΠΘ)), ΓΕΙΑ ΧΑΡΑ (Παπαλοΐζος), Διδασκαλίνα της Ελληνικής Γλώσσας (ΕΔΙΑΜΜΕ) διαθέτουν ψηφιακά τα βιβλία και τετράδια εργασιών, εύκολη λοιπόν η συνέχεια και σε συνδυασμό με διάφορα ηλεκτρονικά εργαλεία υποστηρίζουμε την μαθησιακή διδασκαλία!

​

Η όλη αυτή κατάσταση είναι μια πρόσκληση και πρόκληση να διδαχθούμε πολλά. Συνεχίζουμε δυναμικά με ψυχραιμία, οργάνωση, θετική σκέψη και αισιοδοξία πως γρήγορα τα πράγματα θα αλλάξουν και θα μπορέσουμε να βρεθούμε στο φυσικό μας περιβάλλον, στο σχολείο μας!
